Improving Access to Healthcare and Nutrition for Katkari Communities in Mulshi Block, Pune District (Community Action for Nutrition – CAN-PVTG)

Background

We aim to empower the Katkari community by enhancing their knowledge and access to crucial health and nutrition services. We focus on improving child nutrition, tackling undernutrition among children under six, and combating anaemia among adolescent girls. We collaborate with the ICDS and Health Department to strengthen health and nutrition services, enhance household nutrition practices, and promote diverse food options. Active community engagement and participation are central to our approach.

Broad Objectives

  • Strengthen health and nutrition services through community involvement and awareness, and improve household nutrition practices focusing on the needs of children under six in selected habitations of Mulshi block.
  • Address undernutrition among children under six and anaemia among adolescent Katkari girls with active community participation.
  • Build awareness regarding institutional delivery.
  • Promote Nutri-gardens to enhance food diversity.

Background

Undernutrition continues to be a pressing challenge in rural communities, impacting the growth, development, and overall health of young children. This process seeks to tackle undernutrition through a synergistic approach, strengthening government health and nutrition systems while simultaneously improving household nutrition practices. By fostering food diversity, promoting Nutri-Gardens, and ensuring regular follow-up of undernourished children, the initiative emphasises active community engagement as the cornerstone of sustainable change.

Broad Objectives

  • Strengthen health and nutrition services through community participation, awareness building, and capacity enhancement, with a special focus on improving the nutritional well-being of children under six in selected villages of Junnar block.
  • Combat undernutrition among children under six through systematic follow-up, counselling, and mobilising community support for timely care and interventions.
  • Promote Nutri-Gardens at the household and community level to ensure dietary diversity and build resilience against food insecurity.

Background

Maternal and child undernutrition is a major public health concern in urban settlements, where migrant and low-income families face barriers to accessing quality healthcare. Women often experience poor maternal care and children under three are highly vulnerable to malnutrition.

This initiative seeks to address these challenges through a multi-stakeholder, system-strengthening approach, enhancing maternal health and nutrition services while also improving household practices. The project emphasises community participation, regular growth monitoring of children, counselling of mothers-caregivers, and partnerships with public hospitals to ensure access to timely healthcare.

Broad Objectives

  • Strengthen maternal and child health and nutrition services in five selected urban settlements of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) through community engagement, awareness-building, and capacity development of frontline workers.
  • Address undernutrition among children under three through systematic follow-up, counselling, and mobilisation of community support for timely care and interventions.
  • Promote improved household nutrition practices with a focus on the first 1,000 days of life, including exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and dietary diversity.
  • Facilitate multi-stakeholder collaboration by activating Vasti Poshan va Arogya Gat (VPAG) and linking with Mahila Arogya Samitis, government departments to strengthen accountability and responsiveness of services.

Background

The Katkari community, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), faces multiple barriers to health and nutrition due to landlessness, migration, poverty, and systemic exclusion. Children and women in Katkari hamlets of Mulshi block suffer disproportionately from high levels of malnutrition, poor diet diversity, and limited access to essential services. This initiative builds on SATHI’s experience in community-based monitoring and nutrition interventions, aiming to improve child nutrition, maternal health, and access to public health and ICDS services. By integrating household-level nutrition practices, strengthening frontline workers, and fostering community-led accountability mechanisms, the project strives to build a sustainable model of community action for nutrition.

Broad Objectives

  • To strengthen health and nutrition services through community participation and awareness building, and to improve household nutrition practices focussing on the nutritional needs of children under six in selected habitations of Mulshi block of Pune district.
  • To address undernutrition among children under six years of age with active community involvement.
  • To build awareness regarding institutional delivery and ANC, PNC services and improve access to key government health schemes.
  • To enhance awareness, access, and use of government health schemes among marginalised communities and advancing health equity through education, frontline worker training, and system engagement.
